Early goals doom Sound Tigers in loss at Albany
For Bridgeport Sound Tigers coach Brent Thompson, Sunday’s game in Albany, N.Y., was one of his team’s most complete games, except for one thing.
“We got outgoaltended,” he said after a 3-2 loss to the Albany Devils at Times Union Center.
Eamon McAdam gave up two goals on the Devils’ first four shots and was pulled in favor of Stephon Williams. The Sound Tigers scored two goals in the last five minutes to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Devils’ Mackenzie Blackwood finished with 30 saves.
Bridgeport has two wins in its past 10 games, both in overtime.
After starting the season 7-0, McAdam has been pulled three times in his past four starts. Over those four games, he’s allowed 16 goals on 75 shots; he got the loss in two of them, and he was pulled down by two goals or more in the other two.
Albany’s second power-play goal, Blake Coleman’s deflection of a shot by Vojtech Mozik (three points), gave the Devils a 3-0 lead on their only shot to beat Williams (14 saves).
Steve Bernier got Bridgeport on the board with 15:05 remaining in the third, scoring a power-play goal on the rebound of Ryan Pulock’s shot. Andrew Rowe took a cross-ice pass from Tanner Fritz and beat Blackwood’s glove with 1:44 to go.
“Give our team credit. We played 60 hard minutes,” Thompson said. “It was one of our most complete games in terms of pace, structure, energy. We didn’t get the result.”
Jaroslav Halak and Adam Pelech, sent down from the New York Islanders on Saturday, hadn’t yet joined the team for Sunday’s game.
Bridgeport made a few changes to its line combinations, splitting Bracken Kearns and Bernier for the first time when both were in the lineup.
“If we play like that for 60 minutes, we’re going to win a lot of hockey games,” Thompson said.
Travis St. Denis sat with a one-game league suspension. He was given a match penalty Friday night for a slew-foot on Hershey’s Christian Thomas.
