University in New Mexico to get new athletics director
PORTALES, N.M. (AP) — Eastern New Mexico University has hired a new athletics director.
University Chancellor Jeff Elwell said Matt Billings will start Jan. 20. He said Billings was chosen from a strong group of finalists in part because he had experience in multiple areas at major Division I universities.
Billings most recently served as deputy athletics director at Portland State University, where he oversaw offices including sports medicine, academic services, student housing, compliance, budgets and financial aid.
He played a key role in a $50 million renovation of a weight room, new sports medicine and academic areas and a 3,300-seat arena. He also oversaw football scheduling, guaranteeing games for Portland State that generated more than $6.6 million in revenue for the program.
A Division II school in the Lone Star Conference, Eastern New Mexico has been without a full-time athletic director since Greg Waggoner resigned in June to take another job.
Before Portland, Billings was director of compliance at the University of Southern California for two years. He also held jobs at Boise State and Weber State.
