MALC sweeps Lady ’Lions
BULLHEAD CITY — The host Lady Patriots annihilated the Mingus Mountain Lady Mountain Lions 17-0, 18-0 during their Arizona Interscholastic Association 1A West Region softball doubleheader at Mohave Accelerated Learning Center on Friday.
The victories improved the No. 10-ranked MALC squad’s record to 9-4 overall, 6-2 in conference and 6-1 in region, according to the aiaonline.org power-point system. The loss dropped the unranked Mountain Lions’ record 0-7 overall, 0-7 in conference and 0-6 in region.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association Softball 1A State Tournament will begin at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix, as there will be no home postseason games in the 1A conference, MALC head coach Shanda Weiler said. The top two teams — 16 in all — from every region will earn a berth into the postseason.
PATRIOTS 17, LIONS 0
Freshman pitcher Tori Meraz pitched a three-inning, complete-game no-hitter, while striking out seven to earn the victory in the circle for MALC during the first game.
Sophomore utility player Madison Burright hit an inside-the-park home run, singled, walked once had three RBI and scored three times in three at-bats; junior all-purpose player Payton Questel singled three times, scored three times and had three RBI in three at-bats; junior outfielder Kiarah Holmes singled twice and had an RBI in two at-bats; and Meraz singled twice, scored twice and knocked home two runs in two at-bats to lead the MALC offense.

Freshman all-purpose player Kasey Questel tripled twice, scored twice and had two RBI in two at-bats; junior outfielder Jordan Holmes and an RBI; freshman infielder Alyssa Lopez singled, walked twice and had two RBI in two at-bats to lead MALC.
Burright was the starting pitcher during the second game. She gave up no runs, two hits, struck out four and walked two to earn her three-inning, complete game win.
