Monterrey woman arrested after 4-day-old baby left in car
McALLEN — A Monterrey woman was charged with a misdemeanor after police say she left her 4-day-old baby in a car while she shopped.
Diana Laura Barrios, of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, was charged Monday with one count of leaving a child in a vehicle, a Class C misdemeanor, according to a news release.
Officers responded at about 1 p.m. Monday to a shopping area in the 7300 block of North 10th Street after witnesses reported a child locked inside a vehicle, the release states.
When officers arrived they were directed to a black in color vehicle where the baby was located and removed from the vehicle officials said.
Moments later officers located the 20-year-old woman and arrested her, the release states.
It is unclear how long the newborn was in the vehicle before witnesses called the police.
The baby was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation as a precaution, officials said.
There was no mention of the baby’s current status in the release.
Officials did not reveal Barrios’ relationship to the girl; instead they called her the operator of the vehicle in the news release.
Authorities notified Child Protective Services of the incident, the release states.
A Class C misdemeanor would not lead to jail time for Barrios but she would be ordered to pay a maximum fine of $500.
