Dick’s to celebrate with parade of stars

Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. is opening its first stores in the Houston area Oct. 21 and is bringing in some celebrities to mark the opening of its Friendswood location.

The retailer is opening six locations, including a new three-store concept at 500 Baybrook Mall Drive in Friendswood. The Pennsylvania-based company operates Dick’s Sporting Goods, Field and Stream and Golf Galaxy stores.

In addition to the company’s Dick’s Sporting Goods brand, its new Friendswood location will include its Field and Stream and Golf Galaxy specialty stores offering athletic, outdoors and golf equipment and apparel.

Dick’s will open at 8 a.m. Oct. 21 and 22 and at 9 a.m. Oct. 23.

Customers in line early Oct. 22 for the opening of the megastore’s new Field and Stream shop will have a chance to receive a VIP pass to meet country music singer Jason Aldean. Passes will be distributed to those in line on a first-come, first-serve basis on the day of the event.

Those who receive passes will meet Aldean later that day.

On Oct. 21, Phil Robertson, star of A&E’s “Duck Dynasty,” will bet at the Friendswood store from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Professional golfer Justin Leonard will be there from 6-8 p.m. Wristbands, handed out to guests on a first-come, first-serve basis, will be required to receive autographs.

On Oct. 22, professional golfer Beau Hossler will be at the store from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Professional angler Matt Lee will be on-site from 1 to 3 p.m. Wristbands are not required to meet the Hossler or Lee.

Wristbands will be necessary for guests to meet former Houston first baseman Lance Berkman from 2-4 p.m. or Tom Oar, from cable TV’s “Mountain Men,” from 4-7 p.m. The store will hand out wristbands to those first in line.

On the third day of the grand opening, Oct. 23, “Addictive Fishing” host Capt. Blair Wiggins will be on hand from 9 a.m. to noon.

“Savage Outdoor” host Mike Stroff and “Majesty Outdoors” host Bill Blodgett will meet visitors from noon to 4 p.m. Wristbands will not be required to meet the hosts.

Monica Gonzalez, a former soccer player and ESPN analyst, will be at the store from 1 to 3 p.m. Professional golfer Tom Lehman will appear from 2-4 p.m.

Shoppers will be required to have wristbands to meet Gonzalez or Lehman.
