23rd annual Immigrants’ Day to press for legal protections

March 3, 2019

BOSTON (AP) — Hundreds of immigrants and new Americans are converging on the Massachusetts Statehouse this week.

The 23rd annual Immigrants’ Day at the Statehouse will be held Monday, and advocates say they’ll use the occasion to celebrate immigrants’ contributions to the state while criticizing Trump administration crackdowns and restrictions.

Newly elected Democratic U.S. Rep Ayanna Pressley is among the speakers.

The event is organized by the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, which is pressing for a more open and inclusive society.

Participants say they’ll throw their support behind legislation that would limit state and local participation in federal immigration matters to restore community confidence in police, protect immigrants’ rights to due process and ensure law enforcement is used to fight crime rather than separate families.
