Cleveland Botanical Garden ‘Orchid Mania’ begins: hours, ticket information

CLEVELAND, Ohio - - Although the Cleveland Botanical Garden displays a wide variety of botanicals year-round, this is the time of year when orchids steal the show.

“Orchid Mania” opens Saturday and runs through Sunday, March 11.

Close to two thousand of what the Botanical Garden calls “the world’s most exotic and beautiful flowers” have been flown in from Hawaii for the big event. Others are from much closer to home.

“You’d never guess, but one of the largest growers of orchids is Green Circle Growers in Oberlin,” says Botanical Garden Greenhouse Manager, Mark Bir. Green Circle is wholesale only, he adds.

“Mania” visitors will experience orchids in every shape, size, color and scent filling the corridors for this perennial event. Add to that, dyed versions of the most popular of orchids.

“Two years ago, Green Circle started dying phalaenopsis,” Bir adds. “The colors are artificial, but they’re a lot of fun.”

There’s more to do at the show than see and sniff. The Greater Cleveland Orchid Society, the oldest affiliate of the American Orchid Society, is hosting its annual show and sale on particular days, as well as special workshops and tours.

Fashion meets flowers with Kent State University fashion students’ display of botanically inspired dress designs.

And finally, if you’d like to know more about orchids, the show is all about that, too. For “Ask the Orchid Doctor,” experts will be on hand to answer questions about growing orchids at home.

What happens to all of these orchids when the show’s over? Some are sold on a special members’ night, Bir says. Others are kept for the Botanical Garden’s Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse. Rockefeller Greenhouse gets a share, too.
