From inside the lines to out, Express-News staff writer Terrence Thomas takes a look back and a look ahead at the high school sports landscape:
43: Combined runs scored by Memorial and Jefferson Tuesday in their District 28-5A softball opener. Memorial prevailed 24-19. The teams amassed 33 hits. It was the third time this season that Memorial has been a part of a contest in which both teams scored in double figures. The Minutemen defeated Cornerstone 15-14 on Feb. 15 and Lanier 11-10 on Feb. 17, both at the Edgewood tournament.
100: Career wins for New Braunfels softball coach Andy Schmid, who reached the milestone during the Unicorns’ 13-2 victory over Highlands Feb. 15 at the New Braunfels Canyon-Steele tournament.
100: Career wins for Brennan baseball coach Nick Alvarado, who reached the mark during the Bears’ 13-3 decision over Marshall in Tuesday’s District 28-6A opener for both squads.
2,500: Career points for East Central’s Nalyssa Smith, who reached the milestone during the Hornets’ Class 6A third-round win Tuesday vs. Clark. A Baylor signee, the 6-foot-3 Smith is the eighth area girls player to accomplish the feat.
