Crusaders’ Duo Combines for No-hitter
Shamus Gelinas and Brendan Ferrari combined to throw a no-hitter for the 9th-seeded Groton-Dunstable baseball team in a 6-1 win over No. 8 Fitchburg in a Division 1 Central first round contest on Thursday.
The Crusaders (9-10) advanced to Monday’s quarterfinal, where they will take on top-seeded St. John’s in Shrewsbury.
Gelinas (4.1 innings pitched, 3 strikeouts) had struggled with his command at times, going to 3-ball counts 8 times and walking 6 Raider hitters. But when he needed an out-pitch, he got it.
In the top of the 5th, the Crusaders batted around the order. With one out, Kasey Griffiths singled sharply to right before he stole second. Gelinas drew a walk and then Brendan Cronin singled to left-center to deliver Griffiths with the first of 4 insurance runs that inning.
