Arizona man sentenced in Colorado tax evasion case
DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — A former champion race car driver was sentenced to 18 months in prison after authorities say he failed to pay nearly $2 million in taxes.
The Durango Herald reports 69-year-old Bill Whittington was sentenced this week in federal court in Durango after pleading guilty in May to filing a false tax return.
According to federal prosecutors, Whittington didn’t report income related to about $11 million in offshore bank accounts and about $900,000 from the Springs Resort and Spa in Pagosa Springs.
Whittington, who now lives in Arizona, paid $1.8 million in restitution to the IRS.
Nerissa and Keely Whittington say in a statement that their father never owned nor had a financial stake in the Colorado resort. They say they sold the resort several months ago.
