Police: Wrong-way driver caused head-on crash

December 15, 2016

COLCHESTER, Vt. -

Police say a woman was driving the wrong way on Interstate 89 with a child in her car when she crashed head-on into another vehicle.

It happened just before 4 a.m. Wednesday in Colchester.

Vermont State Police say Hawa Aphy, 37, of Bristol, Connecticut, was headed north in the southbound lane when she crashed into Paula Poquette of Fairfax.

Both drivers and a 1-year-old child in Aphy’s car were taken to the hospital; police say their injuries were not life-threatening.

Investigators don’t believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Aphy was charged with gross negligent operation and endangering the welfare of a child. She’s due in court in February.
