ISU MBB: Boyd, Stutzman earn all-conference honors
RENO, Nev. -- Idaho State redshirt sophomore Brandon Boyd and sophomore Jared Stutzman earned Big Sky Conference honors, the league announced Monday.
Stutzman, a first-year Big Sky player, was named to the league’s third team. The Utah Valley transfer is ISU’s leading scorer with 15.1 ppg, and is the top 3-point shooters in Division I at 53.7 percent (65 of 121).
Stutzman is also sixth in the Big Sky at 57.5 percent from the floor. He scored a career-high 33 points Thursday at Montana State, shooting 11 of 14 overall, 8 of 11 from beyond the arc and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line to lead the Bengals to a 101-78 victory.
Boyd was named the league’s top reserve and earned honorable mention honors. He is second on the Bengals in scoring with 14.7 points per game and came off the bench in 17 of 28 games. Boyd also leads the team and ranks ninth in the Big Sky with a 79.6 percent clip from the free-throw line and is eighth in the conference with 1.3 steals per game.
The biggest highlight of Boyd’s season was Feb. 22 against Idaho, when he scored a career-high 32 points and made the game-winning 3-pointer in the closing seconds, giving ISU an 86-83 win at Reed Gym.
At 5-foot-11, Boyd is ISU’s third-leading rebounder with 4.3 boards per game. He started seven of 18 conference games to meet the requirement of starting under 50 percent of league games to earn the top reserve nod.
Eastern Washington senior Bogdan Bliznyuk was named the league’s MVP. He is joined on the first team by Northern Colorado’s Andre Spight, Weber State’s Jerrick Harding, Montana’s Ahmaad Rorie and Idaho’s Brayon Blake.
Idaho State (14-15) kicks off the Big Sky Conference tournament Tuesday against Southern Utah (11-18) at 6:35 p.m. MST from the Reno Events Center.
