Wake County ABC to hold whiskey lottery in Wendell
Four types of whiskey will be up for lottery from the Wake County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board on Friday.
People who go to the ABC store in Wendell, at 1505 Banyon Place, at 12 p.m. Friday can enter a drawing to buy limited quantities of Whistle Pig Farmstock, Old Fitzgerald BIB, Kentucky Owl Confiscated and Blade & Bow 22 year.
People must be present at the store to enter the drawing.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the county ABC board said its goal was “customer service that is fair and equitable for all.”
But many people commented, saying an in-person lottery on a workday in eastern Wake County would be difficult to attend.
“If it was truly fair, you shouldn’t have to be present to win,” one commenter said. “Not easy for a lot of us to drive to Wendell on a work day.”
Ike Wheeler, general manager of the county board, said the Wendell store was selected because it was large and had enough parking for customers.
“It may not be convenient for a lot of people, but it’s going to be an environment that’s going to be comfortable for everybody,” he said.
Wheeler said the board would rotate through other large stores throughout the county for future alcohol lotteries, like the ABC store in Wake Forest and the store on Sandy Forks Road in Raleigh.
Some asked for the board to move the lottery to Saturday or asked for the drawing to be held online.
Wheeler said holding the lottery on a weekend would have put the drawing in a bigger crowd.
“Any day of the week we pick would’ve been a bad day for somebody,” Wheeler said.
Of the available bottles, 25 percent will be designated for restaurants and bars.
