6 coastal towns to tackle climate change _ together
SACO, Maine (AP) — Six coastal towns in southern Maine are working together to address climate change.
Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission is hiring an expert to study and develop both individual town and regional solutions to address coastal resiliency.
The towns are Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Kittery, Ogunquit, Wells and York.
Kennebunkport Town Manager Laurie Smith says many towns have volunteer energy or climate committees. She said that by pooling resources, the towns can hire someone to address myriad concerns, including sea level.
Executive Director Paul Schumacher said the towns are rising to Democratic Gov. Janet Mills’ challenge. She told the United Nations that, “Maine won’t wait.” Schumacher said the towns aren’t going to wait, either.
