Massu Wins Orange Bowl Tennis
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Nicolas Massu of Chile ended Rudy Rake’s bid to become the first American champion at the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships since 1992.
Massu beat Rake 6-1, 6-2 in 62 minutes Sunday to win the Boys 18 title.
Rake, a native of Peru who became an American citizen in 1993, was just the fourth U.S. finalist in 10 years. Massu became the first champion from Chile. The junior match was the last for both players.
Tina Pisnik of Slovania won the Girls 18 title by beating unseeded Gabriela Volekova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-0. Pisnik, the No. 3 seed, defeated four seeded players en route to the title, including No. 1 Cara Black.
In the Girls 16 doubles final, Anne Nguyen and Ansley Cargill of the United States beat Li Na of China and Maria Buric of Germany 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. In Girls 18, Kim Clijsters of Belgium and Zsofia Gubacsi of Hungary beat Maria Fernandez of Mexico and Michaela Pastikova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-3, 6-3.
In the Boys 18 doubles final, Mirko Pehar and Lovro Zovko of Croatia beat Jaroslav Levinsky of the Czech Republic and Kobi Ziv of Israel 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7). In Boys 16, Feliciano Lopez and Tommy Robredo of Spain beat Sergei Samoseiko and Serge Vassine of Belarus 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
