Baseball May Give W-B Economic Boost

March 7, 2018

WILKES-BARRE — The Wilkes-Barre area should begin seeing an economic boost this spring when the city opens its athletic fields to an organization that sponsors youth travel baseball tournaments, according to Mayor Tony George. Elite Championship Tournament Baseball has requested use of city athletic fields to conduct its tournaments, scheduled to be held between May 1 and Nov. 1, and the administration expects council will approve a lease at Thursday’s meeting. The weekend tournaments are expected to attract travel baseball teams from across Northeast Pennsylvania and beyond while promoting athleticism among local youth and providing them with an opportunity to interact with young players from across the region, according to a news release from the mayor’s office. With 10 to 40 participating teams in each tournament, ECTB estimates the tournaments could draw between 1,500 and 6,000 visitors to Wilkes-Barre each weekend. Additionally, the group estimates that the positive economic impact to the city could range from $15,000 to $60,000 in income per weekend during the 22-weekend tournament, George’s office said.
