Police: Homeless man killed sleeping under truck in rain
HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) — A homeless man sleeping under a truck in North Carolina was killed when the vehicle ran over him, police confirmed.
High Point police identified the victim as Michael Landon Jacobs, 38. Jacobs was sheltering under the truck, which was parked in a grocery store lot, to escape heavy rains early Monday morning, police said in a news release.
A witness called in to report the accident at about 5 a.m. and also noted that the person behind the wheel had driven away, the police statement said. When police arrived, they found Jacobs lying under blankets in a “sleeping position” with a severe head injury. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.
The truck, a 2015 Freightliner, was located about six hours later. Police said the driver has been cooperative and they don’t expect to file charges.
