Osmosis Collaborates with CMSS and VisualDx to Educate the Next Generation of Clinicians about Shared Decision Making, Diagnostic Errors

November 16, 2018

BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 16, 2018--Osmosis, a leading medical & health education platform, has partnered with the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) and VisualDx to educate current and future clinicians on shared decision making and improving diagnoses as part of its initiative to address topics that are not included in a typical classroom setting.

“During my first two years of medical school we spent countless hours in lecture inefficiently learning the science of medicine and comparatively little time on the practice of medicine,” said Shiv Gaglani, the co-founder and CEO of Osmosis. “By working with influential partners like CMSS and VisualDx we are able to co-develop this important content and distribute it to our audience of hundreds of thousands of current and future healthcare providers.”

A video on Shared Decision Making is debuting at the annual CMSS meeting on November 16th in Arlington, VA. Shared Decision Making is an approach of patient-centered care that formally enables clinicians to understand the preferences of their patients, inform their choices and ultimately decide together on the next steps.

“The time is right to promote more Shared Decision Making between patients, families, and physicians,” said Helen Burstin, MD, MPH, EVP and CEO, Council of Medical Specialty Societies. “Future and current healthcare professionals need to understand why Shared Decision Making matters and how to build it into practice. Since we’ve worked with Osmosis before, we knew they could rapidly produce an engaging video that would drive greater adoption of shared decision making.”

An important part of Shared Decision Making is making the correct diagnosis in the first place. Osmosis worked with VisualDx, a leading clinical decision support tool, to develop a video focused on common cognitive mistakes that lead to Diagnostic Errors such as representative bias and premature closure.

“We are excited and proud to partner with Osmosis over the issue of diagnostic error and patient safety,” said Art Papier, MD, CEO, VisualDx. “Together, we believe through education and informatics, we can achieve improved quality care and enhance the clinical decision-making process.”
