Fire destroys lumber warehouse in Rockwood

November 26, 2018 GMT

For close to five hours, 30 firefighters battled a blaze that destroyed a warehouse at Bowers Lumber Company in Rockwood on Saturday evening into Sunday morning.

“It was fully involved,” New Centerville Fire Chief Randy Younkin said of the scene when crews arrived. “We weren’t there five minutes until the roof came in.”

Firefighters from New Centerville, Rockwood, Bakersville, Addison, Confluence and Garrett responded to the scene, located at 3994 Kingwood Road, after being dispatched at 10:57 p.m. on Saturday, according to Somerset County Control. Somerset Area Ambulance also assisted. Firefighters left the scene at 6:22 a.m. Sunday. The business is owned by Charles Bower of Rockwood.

Younkin said the fire was a total loss, but couldn’t give an estimate as to the value of the destroyed building. It took them five hours to extinguish it, with firefighters bringing in excavators to clear the metal roof that caused some difficulties for them in putting out the fire. There is no indication as to what started the blaze, but Younkin didn’t think it was suspicious. Tankers and water from ponds were used as a water source. The building was insured and no one was injured in the blaze.
