North Carolina man dies after jumping off rocks at waterfall

July 2, 2018

BANNER ELK, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina sheriff’s office says a man has died after jumping off some rocks at a waterfall.

Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye told news outlets emergency workers responding to Elk River Falls around 5 p.m. Sunday learned 32-year-old Gogineni Nagarjuna had been swimming with friends. Authorities said witnesses said Nagarjuna jumped into the water from the side, seemed to struggle and went under. His body was recovered two hours later and taken to the medical examiner’s office in Lenoir.

The death was the second at Elk River Falls in six weeks. Authorities said 26-year-old Thomas McCardle Jr. of Martins Ferry, Ohio, slid off a rock, was caught and dragged under by strong currents driven by heavy rains.

It’s also the fifth waterfall-related fatality in western North Carolina in 2018.
