Cause of Kent house fire classified as ‘undetermined’

KENT — The cause of the fire at a Segar Mountain Road home earlier this month will be listed as “undetermined.”

That’s what the town’s fire marshal, Stan MacMillan, said Thursday. “We just couldn’t determine the cause to be A, B or C,” he said.

Emergency personnel responded to a house fire at 117 Segar Mountain Road around 10:40 a.m. April 4.

Firefighters reported heavy smoke and “flames coming through the roof.”

A family of two, as well as their dogs, were home when the fire broke out, said Assistant Fire Chief Wendell Soule, but they all got out safely.

Although the cause of the blaze could not be determined, MacMillan said, he did discover that the fire started in one of the bedrooms on the second floor.

Due to the damage caused by the blaze, MacMillan said the displaced family of two will not be able to return to the home.

The house would need to undergo “major renovations” before that can happen, he said.
