Elyria man found dead outside office building apparently fell and hit his head, police say

ELYRIA, Ohio -- Investigators believe a man found dead Sunday outside an Elyria office building suffered a critical head injury when he jumped over a fence and fell 20 feet to a cement delivery ramp.

Darien L. Norris Jr., 29, of Elyria, died of a head injury he apparently suffered when he fell onto a delivery ramp on River Street at Clark Street, police said in a news release.

Detectives found surveillance video that shows Norris leaving a nearby bar just before he climbed the 6-foot chain-link fence. The fence is located next to the 20-foot drop down to the delivery ramp, police said.

Norris apparently hit his head when he fell, police said. The Lorain County Coroner’s Office determined he died of trauma to the head.

The shipping dock is located in an isolated spot, police said. No one found Norris until several juveniles discovered his body just before 8 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Detectives initially investigated Norris’ death as suspicious, but foul play is no longer suspected, police said.
