Over 700 Latino Community, Business, Corporate, and Philanthropic Leaders Gather to Celebrate Victories of 2018 Mid-Term Election and Pave the Way Forward to 2020
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 16, 2019--
The Latino Community Foundation (LCF) will honor three visionary leaders during its 2019 Gala on Friday, May 17 at the San Francisco Fairmont Hotel. The event will bring together community, political, and business leaders investing in Latino-led organizations that create economic mobility for Latino families and increase voter participation among Latino youth in California.
Special video appearances will be made by former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Henry Cisneros. Also, remarks will be made by former Treasurer of the United States, Rosie Rios. VIP attendees include Mayor of Oakland Libby Schaaf and corporate leaders like Enrique Lores, President, Imaging Printing and Solutions at Hewlett Packard.
This year the Foundation will honor three instrumental leaders in the community:
Honorable Aida Alvarez, Latino Legacy Award. She is the first Latina to hold a U.S. Cabinet level position having served as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration (1997-2001) during Bill Clinton’s presidency. During her tenure, SBA lending to women tripled and lending to minorities doubled. Ms. Alvarez is the former Chair of the Latino Community Foundation.
Maria Teresa Kumar, Nuestro Orgullo Award. She is a political activist and President and Founder of Voto Latino. The organization has played a pivotal role in increasing the turnout of Latino voters in the past two decades. In 2013, Kumar was named as one of the 10 most influential women in Washington DC by Elle Magazine.
Father Greg Boyle, Leading Change Award. He is the founder and director of Homeboy Industries, the world’s largest gang-intervention and rehabilitation program. He is also the former pastor of Dolores Mission Church in Los Angeles.
“Latinos have played a critical role in shaping the political, cultural, and economic tapestry of our country. On this night we honor their contributions and celebrate the leadership of individuals who embody the vision and values of the Latino Community Foundation,” said Jacqueline Martinez Garcel, CEO of the Latino Community Foundation. “In today’s political climate, we are determined to elevate the voices of our leaders and communities that have planted the seeds of hope, justice, and equity. This nation has been made stronger because of Latinos. On May 17, we come together to pave a path forward towards a more just and stronger democracy.”
LCF has invested nearly $10 million in Latino-led organizations on the frontlines of social change. They lead the largest network of Latino philanthropists in the country and have established the first ever incubator for emerging organizations led by Latinos.
