MAR opens ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat’ in Danbury, Friday, July 22
“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” opens Friday, July 22, on stage in Danbury. The Musicals at Richter show, which takes place outdoors under the stars, is based on the biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors.
With lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, “Joseph” takes its cue from the Bible’s book of Genesis, which tells how Joseph, the favorite of Jacob’s 12 sons, was given an elaborate multicolored coat by his father.
Joseph is also blessed with vivid dreams and the ability to tell the future. When his jealous brothers sell him into slavery, he begins a series of adventures. They lead him to discover how his special abilities can save him from difficult situations and endear him to powerful leaders.
This timeless tale is set to various musical genres, from country-western and calypso to bubblegum pop and rock ’n’ roll. Well-known songs include “Any Dream Will Do” and “Go, Go, Go Joseph.”
Connor Spain (Bethel) and Katie Cummings (Newtown) take on the leading roles of Joseph and the Narrator. John Armstrong (Newtown) portrays Joseph’s father, Jacob, and MAR Executive Director Bobby Bria (Redding) is featured as Pharaoh. Lexi Tobin (Newtown) appears as the sassy Mrs. Potiphar. More than 35 people are in the cast.
“Joseph” is directed and choreographed by Newtown High School director of choral music and MAR alumna Jane Matson (Danbury). Joining Matson are Tom Morris (New Fairfield), as musical director, and Kris Aug (Newtown) and Beth Saultz (Brewster, N.Y.), as stage managers.
“Joseph” opened on Broadway in 1982 and was nominated for multiple Tony Awards. It received several major revivals and a second Broadway run in 1993. In 1999, Donny Osmond starred in the straight-to-video film.
