Still time for good fun before summer’s end

July 25, 2018 GMT

Sooner than we want to admit it will be back to school, so let’s squeeze in some summer fun before then!

The opening weekend of live thoroughbred racing at Ag Park begins Friday, Aug. 3, at 6:30 p.m. and the Chamber is proud to sponsor the first race of the season. Races will be held Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons through the first weekend of September. Many of us grew up going to the Columbus Races and that tradition is one that I know many really anticipate each summer. I hope you’ll go enjoy some nights or afternoons at the races and enjoy one of our entertainment options in Columbus.

The next week brings some golf to our calendar and you can register your team or just yourself at the Chamber for the “Go Play Golf” outing at Quail Run on Friday, August 10. The four-person scramble will raise funds for “Go Play” grants. These are given by the Go Play Board to youth sports organizations, both school-based and outside of school. Bottom line, they help get kids off the couch and out being active playing a sport.

Your $75 entry fee gets you a great pork lunch courtesy of Pillen Family Farms & Hy-Vee, 18 holes of golf with flag prizes and flight prizes, and then finally a Cargill Meat Solutions steak dinner.

While you’re at the tournament, you can also buy one of only 49 raffle tickets sold for a VIP trip to the B1G Football Championship in Indianapolis! Dr. Pepper/Snapple sponsors this trip and as you probably know they are one of the sponsors of the game, so as you might imagine it’s a pretty great trip! By the way, you can buy a ticket anytime at the Chamber office, you don’t have to wait until the tournament.

You also know Columbus Days isn’t far away any more. The Coronation Celebration kicks off the week of our community’s celebration on August 13th. Columbus Days Royalty are honored by our community for their long-standing service to our region. In fact, it’s the highest volunteer honor given in Columbus. This year we’ll crown King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella XLIV: Jeff Gokie and Karin Rieger. Tickets for the celebration are available at the Chamber and can be reserved on-line at www.thecolumbuspage.com/events.

The Columbus Barbecue Classic highlights the Columbus Days schedule for August 17-18. Every year the Classic Committee finds a great mix of new and repeat vendors, both local and regional. This year you’ll enjoy favorites from Whyldfire BBQ, Pit Candy BBQ, Baby Huey’s Bar-B-Que, H&H BBQ, and Whiskey Creek…not to mention your favorites in the Knights of Columbus beer garden. The Classic is presented by Pillen Family Farms and Great Western Bank, and without them we wouldn’t be able to enjoy all those ribs.

Certainly, live music goes with BBQ and this year you can enjoy “Taxi Driver” on Friday night and “Soul Dawg” on Saturday night.

I’ve always thought Columbus Days is most fun when you are participating instead of just watching. You can get registration forms and entry information for all those Columbus Days events by stopping in to the Chamber office or going to the Columbus Days website or Facebook page. While you’re on the site at www.columbusdays.com you will also find the latest schedule for the celebration so you don’t miss anything.

Summer’s almost over, but we’re going to have some fun first!
