Maine health officials investigating mumps case in York
YORK, Maine (AP) — Maine health officials are investigating a case of mumps at York High School.
The Maine Center for Disease Control says the unvaccinated student was not isolated during the beginning of their illness and may have exposed other students at York High School from March 6 to March 8 and at a March 7 basketball game at Massabesic High School.
It was the first reported case of mumps in Maine this year. Last year four cases were reported in Maine.
Officials say the student acquired mumps while traveling outside the United States.
Before a vaccine was developed, mumps was a common childhood illness.
The case was reported while the Maine Legislature is considering a bill that would end non-medical exemptions for childhood vaccines required by schools and health care facilities.
