Ex-Mississippi bookkeeper pleads guilty to embezzlement
VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) — A former bookkeeper for a Mississippi county has pleaded guilty to embezzlement and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
The Vicksburg Post reports state Auditor Shad White announced Tuesday that Warren County Circuit Judge James Chaney sentenced Paula Hunt and ordered her to repay more than $140,000 to the county’s tax collector’s office where she worked.
Special agents from White’s office arrested Hunt in May for embezzling the money. Authorities say she collected cash payments from people paying bills and hid the crime by transferring money between multiple office bank accounts. The scheme was discovered when one of the accounts she manipulated was overdrawn.
