Northgate Health Club to absorb Edge Fitness

December 29, 2018 GMT

After about four years of sweat equity in Rochester’s Crossroads Shopping Center, Edge Fitness is moving out its equipment in preparation for closing its doors on Jan. 1.

Northgate Health Club, in the Northgate Plaza at 1112 Seventh St. NW, is taking over Edge’s operation.

“All of the equipment will transfer over to Northgate Health Club as well as the current Edge Fitness members’ contracts, so no members will miss any workouts,” according to a statement released by Northgate.

Northgate officials expect the transition to wrap up “by the first few days of the New Year.”

No one from Edge was available to comment about the closure.

Many members of Edge Fitness are saying this shift is a surprise and they were not notified about the change before management started moving equipment on Thursday.

Jeff McCrady and Lynn Bounds founded Edge Fitness in early 2014 in the 22,000-square-foot spot at 1201 S. Broadway, where the national chain WorkOut World closed in early 2013. McCrady later left the business.

“A lot of people can’t afford a RAC (Rochester Athletic Club), but they want a good, friendly place to work out. We’ll be priced between a RAC and WOW,” said Bounds in 2013. “While we’re going into the old WOW space, this is going to be extremely different.”

It was a big deal when Edge moved into that prime spot in the Crossroads Shopping Center, following WOW’s abrupt closure.

The New Jersey-based WOW came to Rochester in 2008 and took over that space, which was previously the site of a Gander Mountain store.

It appears that 2019 will start with that space empty.

WOW had a second Rochester location in northwest Rochester in the Maplewood Square shopping center that also closed.

This shift could be a boon for Northgate Health Club, which has operated in Rochester for about 50 years.

While large chains have come into the market as well as Mayo Clinic’s Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center and others, Northgate has stayed in the game.

Ronaele and Dan Hoffman, who also own the GM Gym in Grand Meadow, took over ownership of Northgate Health Club in 2016.
