Arts Council gears up for big show tonight

November 14, 2018 GMT

The Butler County Arts Council’s annual one act festival presents all three high school one acts on the same stage.

This year, East Butler High School in Brainard will host tonight’s triple performance and Union Bank and Trust will host the refreshments between plays during intermission.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the first performance at 7 p.m. will be by David City High School, whose original production of “The Spirits of N’Orleans” is directed by Jarod Ockander. Set in 1930s New Orleans, the voodoo spirits and the Count with his minions prove to be formidable foes whose powers are difficult to overcome. At 7:45 p.m., Aquinas Catholic High School presents “Sending Down the Sparrows” by Laura Lundgren Smith, directed by Ann Heermann, with assistant director Katie Brezina. This work of historical fiction, bears witness to the systematic persecution and extermination of the handicapped by Nazi Germany through the character of Viktor, a young man who is a reluctant member of the Hitler Youth.

The evening will conclude with the 8:30 p.m. production by East Butler High School of “The Struggles” by Kendra Thomas and directed by Courtney Johnson. This award-winning, poignant drama centers around Megan, a young girl coping with the learning challenges associated with dyslexia and ADD. All admission fees go toward youth theater and one act productions in Butler County. This and other events throughout the year would not be possible without many sponsors and supporting grants.
