Beaumont holds first Black Heritage Festival Saturday
Area residents gathered outside the Beaumont Civic Center to join in the community’s first Southeast Texas Black Heritage Festival Saturday. Educational booths, vendors, food, and entertainment filled the air at the event, which was organized by community members looking for a new way to celebrate Black History Month and bring together the community as a whole. Among the day’s highlights was a talent show dubbed the Apollo competition, in which contestants of all ages showcased their talents with performances tailored to the theme “Unpacking Your Past.” The winner took home a $500 cash prize. New England Patriots player and Port Arthur native Elandon Roberts also made an appearance and spoke to the crowd, later posing for photographs with fans. The day’s festivities concluded with a performance Saturday night inside the Civic Center by Grammy Award winning gospel singer Kirk Franklin.
