WASHINGTON (AP) _ Diego Serna had three goals and an assist to spark a five-goal second-half outburst as the Miami Fusion closed out the regular season by beating DC United 6-2 Saturday night, tying an MLS record for goals in one half by a team.

Serna started the scoring for the Fusion when he gathered a long pass from Jeff Bilyk seven minutes into the game that he beat DC defender Carey Talley to. He then fired an uncontested shot from 17 yards past Tom Presthus for the only goal of the first half.

After Serna set up Welton for a goal in the 46th minute, DC closed the gap to 2-1 when Geoff Aunger scored his first goal of the season during a scramble in front of the net.

But in the 55th minute, a game that featured two non-playoff teams, eight yellow cards, one ejection and handfuls of missed opportunities became a rout.

Miami (12-15-5, 41 points), which outshot DC 13-5, scored four goals in a span of 10 minutes, including two more by Serna, to establish a team record for most goals in a game.

Serna scored in the 55th minute on a pass from Martin Machon, who has assisted in an MLS record eight consecutive games.

After DC United (8-18-6, 30 points) helped the Fusion’s cause with an own goal in the 57th minute, Miami midfielder Kyle Beckerman found himself unmarked in front of the DC net in the 58th minute and scored on a header for his first goal of the season.

Serna completed his hat trick in the 63rd minute on a pass from Brian Kalmer, his 16th goal of the season.

Miami, which was playing DC for the fifth time this season, returned the own goal in the 79th minute to close out the scoring.
