False missile alert human errors: Darcy cartoon

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The false ballistic missile alert in Hawaii involved more than the single human error of an operator at Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency pushing the wrong button.

The message was sent out in a climate where two other human errors-- Kim Jong Un, acting as North Korea’s Supreme Leader, and Donald Trump, elected President of the United States, have been pushing each other’s “wrong buttons,” recklessly inflaming nuclear tensions between the two nations.

The mistake by Hawaii’s EMA exposed a stunning lack of basic safeguards to prevent such a false warning, and to quickly correct such a mistake, instead of the nearly 40 minutes it took the agency to do so.

The human error also further exposed how quickly the world could find itself in an unintended nuclear war with “Stable Genius” Donald Trump and “Rocket Man” Kim Jong Un in power

“Imagine if a false nuclear alarm flashed while Fox and Friends was on,” tweeted David Frum, former speechwriter for George W. Bush. Frum, who is now a senior editor at The Atlantic was making a reference to news stories that Trump is a regular viewer of “Fox and Friends.”

It’s not a stretch to imagine if a similar ballistic missile warning had come across the screen while Trump was watching “Fox and Friends” or “Morning Joe”, Trump would soon be setting in motion a retaliatory strike, as you would expect from a Commander-in-Chief with a tongue as twitchy as his twitter thumbs.

One of the most dangerous aspects of nuclear arms is the nuclear tensions that come with them that can lead to catastrophic miscommunication setting them off.

It’s unlikely that continued sanctions or threats of military action will stop Kim Jong Un from pursuing his goal of arming North Korea with nuclear weapons.

Unless the U.S. is willing to restart the Korean War, which will result in hundreds of thousands dying in South Korea, Japan and even the United States, the U.S. must shift its strategy to trying to contain North Korea’s nuclear arsenal and put in place the same kind of communication safeguards it has with Russia, to prevent a mistaken nuclear launch.

What caused the dinosaurs’ disappearance? Maybe they created nuclear weapons and left them in the hands of the T-Rex equivalents of Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump. Hopefully someone isn’t asking one day how humanity disappeared. A good guess would be human nuclear error.
