Typhoon Yancy’s Death Toll Reaches 216
BEIJING (AP) _ The death toll from typhoon Yancy, which lashed China’s southern coast last week, has climbed to 216, an official newspaper said today.
The paper, the China Daily, said latest reports reaching Beijing also indicated that 59 were missing in the wake of the typhoon. It said direct economic losses caused by the typhoon were estimated at $170 million.
The report did not give a breakdown by region. Earlier reports said 111 people had died in Fujian province, many of them crushed by buildings that collapsed under torrential rains.
The reports said the typhoon slammed into the province’s coast three times in 24 hours last week. The region had already been hit by four destructive typhoons in the past two months.
