Ex-Vermont prison guard gets 3 months for drug smuggling
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A former Vermont correctional officer has been sentenced to three months in jail for a conviction of working with an inmate to smuggle drugs and other contraband into the Newport prison.
Federal prosecutors say former guard Grant Vance, who pleaded guilty to the charges in March, was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Burlington.
Also Monday, the judge sentenced the inmate to 15 months in prison.
Officials say Vance was searched when he arrived for work on June 28, 2018, and officials found 61 strips of buprenorphine inside a hollowed-out marker. Prosecutors say he also smuggled cigarettes and marijuana into the prison.
Prosecutors say six informants told prison officials Vance was smuggling contraband into the prison.
Vance’s attorney didn’t return a call Tuesday seeking comment.
