Penn State Vs. Rutgers: The Last Meeting

November 10, 2017 GMT

Series: PSU leads, 25-2 Last Meeting: W, 39-0; Nov. 19, 2016 Winter arrived a few weeks early in Piscataway, as several inches of snow covered the High Point Solutions Stadium turf by the time the second half settled in. By that point, the snowball fight had been beaten out of Rutgers. The Nittany Lions outgained the Scarlet Knights, 549 yards to 87, on a night when they were scoring touchdowns in an almost-empty stadium after breaking open a close game at the half with 16 third-quarter points. Tyler Davis’ three first-half field goals constituted all of the scoring before the break on a sloppy night, but Saquon Barkley keyed the second-half surge with a 1-yard touchdown run that preceded future scoring runs by backups Mark Allen, Andre Robinson and Tommy Stevens. But the story of the game was the Penn State defense, which held the Scarlet Knights to just five first downs in the Nittany Lions’ most lopsided shutout win on the road against a Big Ten foe ever.
