Brewers at Nationals: Wednesday game report

July 7, 2016 GMT

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE

■ Once again, manager Craig Counsell took advantage of a team off day (Thursday) to rest Ryan Braun and give him consecutive days off instead of just one. Counsell has done that to assist Braun in managing his lower back after surgery to repair a herniated disc last October.

Braun is on the list of five National League players in the “Final Vote” format to fill the last roster spot on the all-star squad but ranked last among that group after the first day of fan voting. He also could get the call to replace an injured player as he did last year when St. Louis’ Matt Holliday bowed out.

“He’s having the season he has had throughout his career that has made him an all-star (six times),” Counsell said. “He’s certainly deserving. There’s always the possibility (to be added late).”

■ Class AAA Colorado Springs outfielder Shane Peterson, who played in 93 games for the Brewers last season, had surgery to release the radial nerve in his left elbow and could miss the rest of the season. Class AA Biloxi right-hander Adrian Houser, a September callup in 2015, went on the disabled list with a forearm strain, the severity of which was being determined.

STATITUDES

■ Brewers leadoff hitterJonathan Villar had been in a bit of a strikeout funk at the plate with 15 in his previous eight games, including a pair of four-strikeout showings. But Counsell likes the way Villar continues to compete, including staying in the game Tuesday after being drilled squarely on the left thigh by a pitch while attempting a bunt.

“He’s tough,” Counsell said. “There’s nothing that really fazes him. He wants to be out there every day.”

Villar had a strong on-base day in the series finale against the Nationals, reaching three times on a single, walk and double. He is batting .294 with a .380 on-base percentage.
