Power poles knocked down in car crashes
Two utility poles in the Rochester area were broken by car crashes during the past 24 hours, leading to some power outages.
The first crash occurred at 10:10 p.m Monday when a car driven by Jonathan Thomas, 31, of Rochester, lost control of his vehicle and knocked out a power pole in the 4500 block of Eleventh Avenue Southwest in Rochester Township, said Capt. Scott Behrns, of the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office.
Because of darkness and terrain, it was not possible to remove the vehicle and repair the pole overnight. Thomas will likely be charged with fourth-degree driving while intoxicated, Behrns said.
In the second crash, at 7:25 a.m. today, a car struck a power pole in the 200 block of First Street East in Stewartville. The crash caused a major transformer to blow, knocking out power to a portion of Stewartville, Behrns said. The identity of the driver was not available.
