Hamden PD identify 3 killed in Sunday’s crash
HAMDEN — Police identified the three people killed in a crash Sunday on Whitney Avenue in an updated statement on Tuesday. No additional details about the crash were given.
The driver of the car was Maksims Frolovs, 21, of Monroe. And the passengers were 26-year-old Edmonds Mihalenkos, of Bridgeport, and 29-year-old Hiadlas DeOliveira, of Derby.
Initially, police said the passengers were both Bridgeport residents on Sunday. But police Capt. Ronald Smith clarified that one was from Bridgeport and the other Derby in Tuesday’s update.
The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday near the intersection of Route 40 and Whitney Avenue.
A preliminary investigation showed that the car sped out of the Route 40 Connector and crossed over four lanes of Whitney Avenue before colliding with a tree, police said. Whitney Avenue was closed until nearly noon while crews worked to clear the scene.
Hamden fire and police departments sent units to the crash. Firefighters extricated two of the three people from the car. A paramedic pronounced all three dead at the scene.
An investigation into the crash remains under investigation by the department’s Traffic Division.
“As many of you know by now, my family and I were struck by a very tragic event early Sunday morning,” said Mareks Zeltins, Frolovs’ father, in a Facebook post.
Zeltins’ post goes to to say his son, Frolovs, died in the fatal crash.
A wake will be held for Frolovs on Friday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Shaughnessy-Banks Funeral Home in Fairfield. The funeral will immediately follow the wake at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Monroe.
“Thank you for all of your love and support through this difficult time,” Zeltins said.
Information for the other two victims’ funeral services was not immediately available. But a Facebook page that appeared to belong to DeOliveira showed several friends sharing memories and offering condolences.
