Brewers vs. Giants: Wednesday game report
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
■ With Ryan Braun getting a scheduled day off to guard against overtaxing his lower back after off-season surgery, Jonathan Lucroy — playing at first base instead of catching — moved up to the No. 3 spot in the lineup. With Chris Carter also out of the lineup, Kirk Nieuwenhuis batted cleanup for the first time in 330 games in the major leagues.
Nieuwenhuis noted he batted cleanup some at Class AAA Las Vegas last year when he was with the Mets.
“It’s old hat,” he said with a laugh.
Nieuwenhuis went 0 for 3 with a walk and is batting .101 (7 for 69) on the road this season.
■ Reliever Corey Knebel has struggled with his command since coming off a long stint on the disabled list with an oblique strain, issuing six walks in 31/3 innings. Knebel did not retire any of the three batters he faced Tuesday night in the fifth inning, with his two walks helping the Giants score a run in their 3-2 victory.
“I don’t know what it is,” he said. “I know it’s going to come to me. It’s a little tough right now. I know what I can do and what I’m good at. I just have to give it time and I know it will come.”
■ Entering the series, Giants catcher Buster Posey was struggling with a .251 batting average but collected eight hits in the three games to boost his average to .274.
■ The Brewers are 4-10 in games not started by Braun and have scored 46 runs, an average of 3.3 per game. They are 26-26 in the other 52 games while scoring 4.3 runs per game.
