Snow closes Whitefish schools

January 23, 2019

Schools in Whitefish were closed on Wednesday due to an overnight snowstorm that created unsafe road conditions, the district announced Wednesday morning. The closure impacts Muldown Elementary, Whitefish Middle School and Whitefish High School.

All other schools in the Flathead Valley were open, according to the Flathead County superintendent’s office.

About 6 inches of snow fell overnight in Whitefish, according to the Montana Department of Transportation. Kalispell received about 7 inches and Polson picked up about 8 inches.

The department report noted that U.S. 93 was snow packed and ice-covered from Polson to Whitefish. Blowing and drifting conditions were reported on U.S. 2 over Marias Pass near Glacier National Park.

A winter weather advisory for the Flathead and Mission valleys was set to expire at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with an additional 1 to 2 inches likely. The snow advisory means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties.
