500 big trout stocked in Vermont’s Passumpsic River
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) — About 500 big trout are now waiting for anglers in Vermont’s Passumpsic River.
The Caledonian Record reports 350 rainbow and 150 brown trout were stocked in the river not far from downtown St. Johnsbury by officials from the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The stocking comes as the sales of fishing licenses in Vermont is up, probably because fishing is a recreational opportunity available during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Biologist Jud Kratzer says the 2-year-old fish, brought in from the Bald Hill Fish Culture Station in Newark, range in size from 13- to 18-inches. A second stocking is scheduled for later this month.
Fish and Wildlife officials are stocking hundreds of thousands of fish in different rivers and streams across the state. A number of the locations are selected for the state’s “trophy trout” stocking program for larger fish.
