Staples football hires Treglia as its next coach
The long, winding search for to find Marce Petroccio’s replacement is over.
Staples on Monday introduced Phil Treglia as its next football coach. Treglia, 41, comes over from Archbishop Stepniac in White Plains, N.Y., with whom he worked as the offensive coordinator.
Treglia was formally introduced at the Staples Gridiron Club’s annual golf outing at Longshore Golf Club on Monday. He was expected to meet with his new team afterwards.
“I appreciate everyone’s patience throughout this process,” Treglia said. “What I felt this whole time was support from the community, support from the school system and the people that I work with to make this a possibility today. What really helped my decision was that the kids of Westport, the community was one. That’s really what I want to do as the football coach here, is blend the community with the high school and blend the boys from the PAL to the Staples football team as one community, one football program.”
Petroccio coached the Wreckers for the last 25 seasons, winning 210 games, three state championships and five FCIAC titles. The legendary coach resigned in late January to take a similar position at his alma mater, Trumbull.
