March 27, 2017 GMT

Kenneth J. Nysted, 74, of Fort Atkinson, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Alden Estates in Jefferson.

Born on Dec. 7, 1942, to Julius and Nina (Stock) Nysted in St. Paul, Minn., Ken was raised in Loyal.

He met the love of his life, Mary Ann (Asplin) Nysted, in nearby Marshfield, and spent the next 48 years adoring his wife and raising his family: Matt (Tina), Tim, Pete (Kelly), and his grandchildren Nolan, Nichole, Josh, Allyson (Ruben), Ashley, Eli and Ethan.

Ken spent 15 years proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy in which he and his family spent tours in Scotland, Virginia, Guam and Okinawa. Receiving a Medical Discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1980, Ken and his family decided to establish roots in Fort Atkinson.

He received his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and taught at Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville for 15 years before retiring.

After retiring, Ken enjoyed the simple things in life: A bike ride along the Rock River, breakfast with the morning crew at McDonalds, a car ride or simply anything with Mary.

Ken always will be remembered by his family and friends as an incredibly kind and gentle person. An individual who rather would go without versus seeing someone else in need. He also had the knack for being able to start up a conversation with anyone.

Always the humble educator, he always left people feeling good about themselves. This was so special because Ken truly was a genius but simply never wanted to come across that way.

A private family gathering was held to honor Ken. A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date.

We all are better because of him! We love you and will always miss you!
