All-CUSA 1st team includes Pastrana
HUNTINGTON — Reynaldo Pastrana from the Marshall University baseball team was an All-Conference USA first team choice.
Pastrana, a junior catcher from Miami, had a big season both at the plate and behind it. He led the Thundering Herd in batting average (.355), hits (71), runs (37), doubles (14), home runs (13), runs batted in (50), total bases (124) and slugging percentage (.620). He allowed only two passed balls and made six errors in 49 games.
Luke Reynolds of Southern Miss was chosen as C-USA Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.
The junior third baseman, a transfer from Mississippi State University, leads C-USA in seven offensive categories including batting average (.403), on-base percentage (.558), slugging percentage (.749), total bases (143), runs scored (67), home runs (15) and walks (56). He is tied for the lead in doubles with 19 and third in RBI with 58.
Reynolds, who enters the C-USA tournament having reached base in 28 consecutive games, has 25 multiple-hit and 22 multiple-RBI outings.
Southern Miss (39-15) is the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament that begins Wednesday at MGM Park in Biloxi, Mississippi. The Golden Eagles won their second consecutive regular season title with a 23-6 record in league play.
Right-handed pitcher Nick Sandlin from Southern Miss was picked as the C-USA Pitcher of the Year. Sandlin has an 8-0 record and league-leading 1.25 ER A. The junior is also a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy given to the best player in college baseball.
Voting for C-USA awards was done by a panel consisting of each head coach, each team’s media relations director and a media representative from each city.
