Mitchell Sons of American Legion raise funds for veterans home
MITCHELL — The Mitchell Sons of the American Legion held its annual Memorial Day breakfast on May 28, raising over $400 for the Western Nebraska Veterans Home in Scottsbluff.
Rich Peters said the Sons have hosted the Memorial Day breakfast for the past 45 years. The money sponsors the home’s putting green and horseshoe games in the summer and the concentration game in the winter.
“They have cash prizes for everybody and at the end, they have a tournament that we buy some gifts for,” Peters said. “And if they have odds and ends through the year, we pay for that stuff.”
He estimated that 150 people attend the breakfast annually, which usually raises $400-500.
In addition to the breakfast, the Sons also hold memorial services and form the honor guard at Mitchell Valley Cemetery, Mitchell Cemetery and the North Platte River bridge.
