EHS students take to the airwaves on Ellensburg Community Radio

September 12, 2017

When the hosts of “Waiting for Toast” on Ellensburg Community Radio hop on the mic, it’s easy to imagine no one is listening. No one except Lucia Valverde’s mom.

“My mom is always listening,” Valverde said with a laugh. “We know that.”

The show is hosted by Valverde and her fellow Ellensburg High School classmates Meredith Nover, Cyril Stanford and Macenna Perez and airs at 3 p.m. on Tuesdays.

It was a little nerve-racking at first to speak on the local airwaves, especially so when they were hooked up to the outside PA system during a First Friday Art Walk earlier this year.

“There was a delay, so we’d hear our voices outside after,” Valverde said. “That was probably the most nerve-racking because we physically knew there were people listening.”

The group was introduced to the station after Stanford wrote a story about ECR for the EHS newspaper. Being friends interested in music themselves, they decided to start a show. The students pick a genre of music to play each week, and put together a collaborative playlist on Spotify, which Stanford then plays from his phone.

Other than the sometimes awkward stalling and banter, Nover explained with a laugh, the only contentious part can be picking the genre or the songs.

“Usually if somebody objects to something, we just get rid of it,” Nover said.

The group can’t tell who’s out there listening, but they did receive a piece of fan mail through ECR board president Mollie Edson.

“We really hit that senior crowd — and not seniors in high school,” Valverde said. “So they’re really impressed with the high schoolers.”
