Fuel spill closes Interstate 70 near Hempfield, South Huntingdon
Westbound Interstate 70 was closed early Wednesday after a broken-down tractor-trailer spilled fuel, authorities said.
A Westmoreland County 911 supervisor said that at about 2:10 a.m., a truck’s drive shaft broke and ruptured its fuel lines, dumping diesel onto the roadway in the area between the Madison and Yukon interchanges, along the border of Hempfield and South Huntingdon townships.
A tow truck removed the broken-down truck, and the county hazmat team responded to contain the fuel spill. The highway was restricted to a single westbound lane around 6 a.m. while PennDOT crews cleaned up the spill.
