Fall and winter extracurricular activity opportunities
Athletic and social activities are some of the best opportunities we can offer our children. Benefits from being involved in sports are scientifically shown to help students develop long-term health habits, build self-esteem and an understanding of commitment and help advance teamwork skills. Engagement in the arts help cultivate skills such as creativity, fine motor skills, confidence and focus. While fall sports have already began, there are still many opportunities for winter.
Below is information for opportunities available to youth in our area.
Registration for girls and boys basketball through the Boys and Girls Club opens in November, with the season running January through mid-March. Students in third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades are welcome. Sports physicals are required for anyone who has not already submitted one for previous sports. The YMCA of Douglas County hosts basketball teams during the winter for each gender at different age-based levels. The Itty Bitty group include 3 and 4 year olds, kindergartners can register for the Biddy group, first and second graders are considered Rookies and third and fourth graders are Winners. Registration opens Nov. 1. Forms can be accessed online at ymcaofdouglascounty.org or by visiting member services at the Roseburg branch, 1151 NW Stewart Parkway.
The Umpqua Valley Tennis Center offers school year classes from Sept. 4 through June 14. Classes are held for ages 4 to 19 at different days and times. Fees range from $12 to $24, depending on if you are a center member or not and whether you are participating in a drop-in or registered and pre-paid status. Dance class registration at Leap of Faith Dance Center is ongoing year round, though class openings can be limited. Classes are available for ages 2 and up. Registration fees for the studio are $25 per student or $40 for a family, though a discount is offered to families. Costume fees also apply. Kathryn Howard School of Dance, 1437 NE Dee St., Roseburg, offers classes in various forms of dance for students 3 years old up to high school seniors. Registration can be completed online at roseburgdance.com or in person at the studio. Fees vary depending on how many hours a week a student participates. Registration and costume fees also apply. Located at 780 Northwest Garden Valley Blvd. #230, Roseburg, Umpqua Valley Gymnastics has classes for ages 2 and up. Fees start at $50 and go up depending on age and class. Information can be found at umpquavalleygymnastics.org or by calling 541-672-3534.
Performance Martial Arts Academy, 760 NW Hill, Roseburg, hosts classes year round. Various classes are offered for ages 3 and up. Tuition starts at $60 a month and goes up depending on the desired class. Family discounts are available. Dynamic Martial Arts, 1223 NE Cedar St., Roseburg, also holds classes year round. They have seasonal specials for new participants. Ages 4 and up are welcome. Visit in person, call 541-229-5836, or visit roseburgdojo.com for more information.
Located at 1523 NE Vine St., Roseburg, Roseburg Martial Arts Academy welcomes students ages 4 and above. Classes are held per age range throughout the year, including summer. The academy can be reached at 541-672-6190 or roseburgmartialarts.com for further details.
Taekwondo classes are also offered through the YMCA. Students can gain skills from white to black belt and beyond from experienced black belt instructors. All experience levels are welcome and classes are offered for ages four and up. Contact head instructor Janon Rogers at 541-450-3270 for more details.
The Umpqua Valley Arts Center provides children and teen art classes during the school year. Class prices vary. Check uvarts.com for updates to the 2018-2019 schedule.
Douglas County Youth Orchestra offers classes for beginning through advanced players. Classes are open to all violin, viola, cello and string bass players ages 6 and above, at all skill levels. Registration fees vary, with scholarships and payment plans available. An information night is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the First United Methodist Church, 1771 W.
