NSAA Class: B

Head Coach: Jimmy Motz

Years Coaching at Current school: Fourth year as Head Boys Coach

Coach’s record at school: 32-37

Career record: 145-124

Coaching highlights: Won Class D-2 state championship in 2009, Finished third at Class D-2 state tournament in 2011, made four consecutive state tournaments from 2009-2012, named Nebraska Coaches Association Class D-2 Basketball Coach of the Year in 2009 and finalist for Coach of the Year (All at Sterling).

Assistant coaches: Brady Vancura, Marcus Gillespie, Kyle Buckingham & Jon Tomasevicz

Last year’s record/achievements: 12-11, first team out of a sub-state final berth, fifth at GNAC Tournament.

Strengths: The Discoverers may have one of their deeper teams in a long time, thanks to an injury plagued 2017-2018 season. Several returners saw some quality minutes throughout the duration of last year, which will be beneficial entering the 2018-2019 season.

Weaknesses: The Discoverers graduated all five starters from last year’s 12-11 team and lost 87 percent of its scoring and offensive production.

One of the major questions entering the campaign is who will provide scoring offensively.

This will be one of the more intriguing preseasons in Coach Motz’s tenure and the potential for freshman to see playing time is a possibility early on in the season.

Season Outlook: Honestly, I’m very excited to see how this group improves each week. There may not be a lot of expectations from the outside, but this maybe our most competitive group since I’ve been here.

It’s a hard working group who put the time in during the summer, made a commitment to get better, and now they get their opportunity. I know we’ll compete and work hard and that is a good foundation to build from early on in the year.
