Company brings high-tech golf simulator to downtown Albion

March 4, 2019

ALBION, Mich. (AP) — Teeing off on jewel-green grass with a view of sunny skies and clear blue waters in the winter is more or less an impossible dream in Michigan.

But, in the newly opened Mitchell Golf Performance Studio in downtown Albion, you’ll be able to get close with its high-resolution golf simulator.

“We’re trying to engage locals to come in and use the simulator for entertainment purposes, for fun,” Stephanie Dobbins, the vice president of Mitchell Golf Equipment Company, said to the Battle Creek Enquirer. “We want to add to the downtown life, something to do, so they can hit a restaurant, play some golf, catch a movie.”

Mitchell Golf Equipment Company is a golf equipment manufacturer. It started in Ohio but all of its operations moved to Albion in 2016 when Albion’s Caster Concepts acquired it.

The company is part of the long list of things Caster Concepts and the Dobbins family have opened in Albion, a list that includes Pure Albion, The Office, Brick Street Marketing and the not-yet-open Foundry Bakehouse and Deli.

Mitchell Golf recently held a grand opening.

After two years of getting, the company running smoothly from its new Albion base, the company is restarting the golf club making and repairing classes it used to host in Ohio alongside opening its new golf simulation studio.

“One of the first questions we got from customers was ‘Are you going to have training schools again?’” said Andrew Dobbins, president of Mitchell Golf Equipment Company.

Mitchell Golf recently held its first four-day club-making workshop at its downtown Albion facility. The new studio is across from the Kids ‘N’ Stuff Children’s Museum and next to the Courtyard by Marriott.

“We had people from Seattle, Washington, Washington D.C., Detroit, who flew in, stayed at the hotel, for four-day intensive hands-on building, specing, rebuilding clubs,” Dobbins said. “It was kind of a ’Hey, we’re going to have our first class and figure some kinks out, get some bumps out.”

There are monthly classes planned for once a month, at $799 a class. The next class is March 25 through 28.

“The exposure from bringing people into town from out of town is great, and being able to have the simulator, something else for people to do, is unique,” Dobbins said. “There’s nothing else in our area like this.”

And the studio is something local golf enthusiasts appreciate as well.

“I’ve already booked time tonight so my husband and I can come here and play,” said Kelly Rice, an Albion resident who was at the Mitchell Golf Performance Studio grand opening. “Plenty of opportunities for us to keep in shape and keep our swing during the winter months, and I’ve never played Pebble Beach in real life, but I can play here.”
